It's about this time of the year that I begin to get obsessed with horror movies. Due in part because Halloween is right around the corner and because they're on almost every channel imaginable. I'm always searching for that next great horror movie that's going to scare the shit out of me and keep me up at nights. I'm not really sure why but I just love being scared. Some of my favorites are Halloween, The Ring, Friday the 13th, The Exorcist and pretty much any movie that has zombies or zombie like creatures.
The horror genre is notorious for making very unoriginal, formulaic movies that work better as unintentional comedies. So after seeing just about every great horror film there was to see, I thought the genre had nothing left to offer. That was until my brother interrupted my game of Madden late one night to tell me he couldn't be alone because he had just seen The Blair Witch Project. My initial reaction was laughter even though I hadn't even seen the movie yet myself. I had only heard people say this movie was garbage and decided not to see it based on that. So after some convincing from my brother I decided to give the movie a whirl.
To my surprise, The Blair Witch Project was a very original, effective horror flick. The plot is simple. Three film makers are filming a documentary about the mythic blair witch, they disappear in the woods they were filming in, and their footage is recovered and that is what we are watching. So the whole movie is seen through a 1st person view of who ever is filming (Cloverfield did this too). To some this is a turn off but for me this is what made the movie. It gives you this feeling that you are actually there, making everything that much more frightening.
So if you're a big fan of the horror genre and are one of the few people who still hasn't seen this movie yet, this movie is well worth your time.
